What are three things that you
instantly remember when people talk about St. Patricks Day? Irish dancing?
Shamrock? The “Kiss me I’m Irish” slogan? Anything else? As for us, these three
things come top of the list in our mind: shamrock, Leprechauns and Guinness.
St. Patricks day will be celebrated on March 17th. Of course it’s big in Ireland, and there are Irish bars all over the world, so… we thought we would share some history with you…
According to American Irish historical society, the St. Patricks Day festival started in the 7th century. The actual St. Patricks Day celebration last for a whole five days with parades, dancing, special food and of course plenty of Guinness (wear something green if you want to fit in).
Here are several fun facts that I bet you might never know about St. Patricks Day. I hope you find them interesting.
- Saint Patrick wasn’t even Irish. He was born in Britain. Patrick was kidnapped though (in 403) and spent some years as a slave in Ireland. He escaped in 409, but returned in 432.
- Shamrocks don’t really exist. Shamrocks, a leaf that Patrick used for explaining the Christian holy trinity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, don’t really exist. Some botanists consider the official shamrock is Trifolium dubium. Nowadays they have become synonymous with the four leaf clover.
- The biggest St. Patrick’s Day Parade is in New York. And yes St. Patrick’s Day Parades started in America. The parade in New York, attracts more than two million spectators.
Irish or non-Irish, but Irish-at-heart, make sure you get your best green attire to celebrate St. Patricks Day.
